Open Campus (August)
Yamaguchi University held Yamaguchi University Open Campus 2015 (Yoshida Campus) on Sunday, August 9.
Despite the fact that there was a heat wave that day, more than 4,500 high school schools and their parents or guardians showed up, of which more than 500 of them participated by visiting the Faculty of Global and Science Studies. Thank you!
In order to spread awareness of the Faculty of Global and Science Studies, in the afternoon we explained three of the features of the faculty (1. Education that combines the humanities and science, 2. Communication skills and the ability to work together, and 3. The ability to provide value and solve problems through design science).
In the afternoon, events were held with the participation of the high school students where they got to really experience the Faculty of Global and Science Studies.
The first was called “English—Challenge Yourself with a 50-minute Study Abroad Session!” At the event, a scene about studying abroad was performed, and the participating high school students interacted with students in the faculty and international students from overseas entirely in English.
The second one was called “Let’s Design!” This gave the participants hands-on experience with design in order to familiarize them with “design science,” which is one of the major features of the faculty.
The participants were divided up into groups together with students from the faculty, where they discussed how they would resolve a particular problem using design science techniques, then presented their results!
Social Mixer Barbecue for Students and Teachers (August)
A Social Mixer Barbecue was held based on a suggestion by the students with the goals of promoting friendship between the students and deepening their exchanges with professors and staff.
After everyone had eaten their fill of barbecue, the students and the professors and staff formed individual groups, and a group-on-group quiz tournament was held! The questions on the quiz were factual questions about the professors sitting right in front of them, and everyone had an incredible time!
Presentations in English and English Speech Contest (October)
At the commemorative ceremony for the establishment of the Faculty of Global and Science Studies, five students gave presentations on the theme of “Living in a Global Society!” They spoke freely on subjects such as their own personal dreams and vision for the future in front of an audience of more than 300 people.
In addition, an English speech contest was held as a homecoming day event. Nine students each spoke freely from the heart in the aim of taking first place in a contest format.
They demonstrated the results of their short-term language training in the Philippines in front of the general visitors, as well as their professors and other students.
Halloween Events (October)
We held Halloween events on Friday, October 30.
Beginning in the morning, the students applied face paint and dressed up in costumes as they pleased, then “earnestly” attended classes.
In the afternoon, students visited a nearby nursery school where they had a good time handing out Halloween sticker of Yama-Me, the Yamaguchi University mascot, and playing tag.
Once all the classes were finished, next it was time for the costume contest!
It was such an impressive line-up of entrants that we had an extremely hard time choosing a winner!!!
Next year, 100 international students will come to join the Faculty of Global and Science Studies.
What sort of Halloween will we have then, we wonder!?
